ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXDirector sought for unsigned band video. Budget to be discussed.

Unsigned London band wishes to shoot video for independent single release in September. If you're interested, could you quote a figure for the budget. We have no wish to exploit students or young directors, but we do have fairly limited resources.
Apologies that at this stage we are unable to provide a figure ourselves, but we would like to hear from you what would be considered reasonable so we can can plan other aspects of our promotional campaign accordingly.
Cheers, Matt.

This is why I never undertake blind tendering, much loved by public sector box tickers. How can anyone even vaguely suggest a budget for a production that could quite reasonably cost anything from a few hundred to over a million pounds. Clients ought to know how much money they have and say so. Fishing expeditions hoping for the cheapest deal is unlikely to illicit the best value for money. What you ought to be looking for is the best production for the budget you have.

Hey fella, do you have an idea of what you want or are you looking us to come up with an idea for the video? It might be fun. I'm in Barcelona then Miami - back in the London from the 29th if you fancy a drink and a natter about it. Adam. -- adamethancrow.com

Hi Matt,
If you’re looking for people to collaborate with, the most effective way of reaching other members is to list your project in the Production part of the site. You can do this by clicking on the navigation ‘Production’ > ‘Get People’ (https://shootingpeople.org/production/people).
Once you’ve completed your post, the project will be available to view on the site in the Production directory and will be published in the bulletins.
Good luck with it.

Matt, John's final sentence gave you good advice. Your first response was witty, but with your second response you shot yourself in the foot.

Hi Matt,
I think you can start this two ways. As Alan and John said, start with your budget. Or, secondly, start with an idea and save up for (or raise money for) that.
You can have a fairly inexpensive video which is mainly a live performance of the band, maybe two experienced camera people shooting for the day, and editing that to one of your songs. Or, you could go for something more artistic, like a Bjork video.
But, if you want to look at prices, a good way to start is looking at people and time. Instead of asking how much something costs, describe what you want, and ask how long it takes and how many people are involved.
Michael Jackson's thriller cost over a million, and that was decades ago, so inflation would make it cost more. You're probably looking in the tens of thousands (at least) if you want anything that looks really professional (anything beyond simply filming a performance), but some cheaper videos do get on MTV.

Hi Matt,
Are you still looking to make the video/find a director? If so I might have a solution. First it would be good to hear/see any material from your band. Also good to know how the video will fit into the other promo activity you have planned. Do you need social media friendly edits for example? From your post I understand (I think) the kind of help you need. You have a low budget, want a professional looking audio/visual project to get your name out there and not sure of the resources you need. If you're still looking for someone feel free to contact me.
