Does anyone know a good post house or person who has Premiere editing suites? we have 2k footage shot on Alexa, pro res. Thanks

We have just shot a short Sci fi film on Alexa, at 2k, and my editor's kit does not have the capacity to handle the rushes. He edits on Premiere, so I'm wondering if I can do a deal with someone? Please answer here or contact me direct - We are low budget but not looking for a deferred deal or a freebie.

It's like all the production and post production evolution we've had in our industry. When true broadcast standard, real time, Non Linear editing systems first arrived they literally cost six figure sums and Avid was it, as was the absolute necessity of the Apple Mac platform because PC's were a useless pile of pooh for that purpose. Because of this Avid/Mac attained a dominance that garnered a very influential 'tribe' that's still able to wave a Svengali like spell over much of the older generation, despite the fact that more Avids are now PC based than on Macs. PC's have become excellent platforms for edit suites for a whole host of compelling reasons including cost, flexible upgrading, quantum leaps in hardware quality and raw power; also Premier is better suited to PC's than to Macs. There's also an ergonomic schism between Avids and many of the newer systems. I'd suggest that Avids are awkward and counter intuitive, but on the other hand those trained on Avids might suggest the contrary. Perhaps the very clumsiness of Avid is a part of what has maintained it's veneer of superiority. Ironically Premier Pro full suite at over 2,500 UK pounds is bloody expensive by today's standards; strange when one considers the six figure sums demanded in the 90's for those excruciatingly clumsy and vastly inferior systems.

I have adobe prem, after effects and speed grade etc etc, I work form a laptop but its a high spec and I've edited my own 4K footage just fine, I also have film convert and can render a DCP or MP4 whateever you want. open to discussion on a "deal" I have a good sense of rhythm and feel for pace

What an interesting info session, big thanks to everyone's input, and the problem is one of whether or not to upgrade my editor, he's only just gone on his own, but has years of experience, but in deliverables professionally, and editing has come about due to him making zero budget films on his own, which means he's fully aware of the problems but at this time can't afford to upgrade... However, the avid/post house V premiere at home systems which are fast catching up is an interesting one... I'm planning a feature this summer which has the budget to choose whatever I want... And U have to say that a post house will always win for me because it's just a good way and setting to work in

I agree entirely with your overview John. When I started as an editor in broadcast in the mid 70s it was quad on two-inch tape and a proprietary timecode pulse system. The first NLE in broadcast was a bunch of carts (cartridges) emulating the film editing workflow, that didn't last. But yes, Avid/Mac stood a long time and became the standard for many coming from the film end of the business.

We operate both Avid AND Prem Pro CC with Speedgrade AND Resolve on PC. Yes, 32 GB RAM, i7 Intel, and high speed multi-drive RAID, but what glues it together is the new fast NVidia graphics.

"He edits on Premiere..." CS5.5 & CS6 won't handle 4K and (2K), but should do 1920x1080p without problem, just depends on your editor's hardware. Premier Pro CC 2014 will do 4K and 2K easily across most codecs and wrappers MXF and Pro Res in MOV or other wrappers. But you need the hardware to keep up with the data through put..

Sadly Jane, your editor sounds as though he/she has not been updating his/her system to keep up with the way the industry has moved this last two years. Premier Pro CC 2014 on a PC system I describe above is more than capable even at 4K given the right RAID disk setup on Nvidia. However, you won't get that on a laptop.

We exclusively use Prem Pro now as it is well able to handle multiple codecs (and wrappers) as native unlike Avid, FCP, and Vegas where often you need to transcode and run a proxy.

Not sure you'll find many 'good' post houses that use Premiere, you'll probably find it easier to get Avids - any use?

Hi Jane,

Not sure if you've solved this already or not. We're based in east London and use Premiere, normally with 2k or 4k footage. We'd have to charge *something* or come to some kind of arrangement, but can easily make HD proxies for your editor and then conform back to the masters at the end if that's useful too. Which version of Premiere does he use - CS6, CC?

Can't he render proxies to work with? 2k isn't that much more demanding than 1080p.

I have edit several short films using Premier Pro on my 12 core Mac Pro with SD drives, so it can handle 4K footage just fine so would be able to edit your 2K material. So happy to take a look at it and discuss rates.

Hi Paddy, up to now I've edited on Avid, I did my feature on it, and most other projects, and yes, it's good. However, I value my current editors narrative abilities, but he's only very conversant with Premiere at the moment - Which, incidentally is fast taking over rom FCP as the alternative to Avid.... But it is a problem as far as this edit is concerned! I'm almost thinking of paying for him to train on Avid, so got any ideas there? Thanks Jane

I'm sure your right Paddy that there wont be many post houses working with Premier, but that's no reflection on the capabilities of Premier. As Jane says Premier continues to eat into the market once dominated by FCP and is used extensively by the BBC and within that growing sector of independent producers who do more and more in house. I imagine that the days of the 'post house' as a separate business, as currently described, are numbered for that reason. The tools of our trade are not so disproportionately expensive as they used to be. They're getting even cheaper and better too. Moores Law etc. It's about human talent far more than kit. It seems that Jane's editor doesn't have enough processing power and/or data capacity on his system, but the cost of building a super powered PC with oodles of terabytes of auto doubling safety back up is relatively cheap. Such Premier based systems can be built for less than 2K (plus the software). One of the special things about Premier is it's seamless integration with the whole range of Adobe tools.

Post house business aren't likely to encourage Premier if it's the very system that's likely to undermine their business models.
