How do you credit someone who fixes things in post?

8 years, 8 months ago - Emmeline Hartley

Whilst editing my last film, there were two lads who I sent various clips to to have them fixed.

For example when we were filming, a car boot had been left open in shot and you could see all our equipment in it. These incredible VFX artists painted the boot shut.. A text message was filmed coming through on a phone but it said the wrong thing- they changed it. Tiny things were in shot that shouldn't have been- they took them out. A shot had been slightly distorted by the lens- they fixed the lens distortion.

You get my drift. They were amazing!

My problem is though, what credit should they have? I have someone down as VFX Artist because he sorted all the green screen stuff, and at the moment I have these boys down as 'Additional VFX' but is there a different credit that would be more suitable? I can't figure it out.

Many thanks,
Emmeline

As a rule ;Honestly and proportionately, though as Dan can tell you, other realities may apply.

If the fixer has substantialy contributed to or exceeded the work of even the director or as is most usual the editor then his or her name ought to share the credit, with person providing most value taking the upper position. That's just natural justice, but this business can sometimes be predatory, ruthless and unpleasant This is a question that really ought to answer itself.

I responded to a broader issue thsn you askef about. My passion in these things knows no bounds.

With regard to the specific example of your picture fixers though you could simply add them to the existing VFX list or add a new credit such as Digital Effects Artists

Other realities indeed, John! When I read the title of this post, I thought "this is right up my alley!" But sadly not.

I'm with John; just add them to the existing VFX list. That's where they belong. Are you asking because the Green Screen guy is giving you grief over the shared credit?

As someone who provides VFX as an artist and producer/supervisor, I would say from past experience, you could credit the two fixers as VFX Artists or Digital Artist. Greenscreen and Roto are entry level 'type' of roles so in fact you could just be fair to everyone and list everyone under VFX Artists/Digital Artist. If someone helped you on set though, say in setting up the greenscreen and liasing with the Cinematograqpher and 1st, and making sure everything was as it should be for VFX shooting, then you could actual credit them as a Supervisor.

My 2c worth.
