I am looking to learn Avid through someone who has a passion for the software.

I am wondering if anyone would be willing to teach me Avid? I have the software at home but am completely clueless about it and am not learning much from online tutorials. I need hands on training from someone who is willing to teach someone.

Do Avid still do the free version to learn on? Back in my post days I started with the free software, then went to Avid Express, then MC and finally DS... Some of these are probably defunct now. But MC is still the work horse it always was for film.

Tony's question is important - if it's going to be even just part of your livelihood, professional training is an investment (an accredited Avid 101 course in the late 90s is still my touchstone; Hoxton was still so grungy back then, but they knew what they were doing!) Check class size and tutors profile - and have one yourself, along the lines of what you want to be able to do/make, and in what contexts.

I used to teach it when I ran the Brighton Film School but it was (literally!) thrown into the skip by the academics who took it over because they preferred FCP instead of the professional Avid...

Have you looked into Avid classes? When I was learning Avid back in the mid 90s or so, the Editor's Guild (local union chapter here) had classes taught by Avid. Now there are many schools around that teach specific software (well, at least here in Los Angeles).

Also, there's Lightworks (a much better digital editor in my opinion) that is based out of London, I believe. Or perhaps these schools are oppressively expensive. I have no idea.

To answer Dan's question: I actually graduated from Ravensbourne with a 2:1 in editing and post production but their Avid classes weren't great. I couldn't learn it from them so now I'm looking into learning it from someone else, maybe 1 to 1 might be better for me.

To answer Tony's question: For my personal work (showreel etc) I use Premiere, but as I want to make Editing my profession, I want to learn Avid, even if just the basics. I moved over from FCP to Premiere so now I'm trying to also learn another software.

To answer Susi's question: I was thinking of looking into Avid classes, but thought I'd start here and see what people suggested :)

And this one is for Franz: They went to FCP instead of Avid? Whoa. My uni did say that we should know at least 1 software back to front but that we should also get to know Avid as thats what they use in the industry, though I am seeing more and more people in the industry use other softwares, so i don't even know anymore.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi Emmalie, for what purpose do you want to learn avid. To work as an editor or to edit your own work?

Best, Tony.

I think this course is for what you need Emmalie to make the transition.
