Is anyone good at coming up with clever and ambiguous film titles?

8 years, 11 months ago - Emmeline Hartley

Hi fellow filmmakers!

Trying to keep this on the down low as much as possible, but also desperate for suggestions.

We've just wrapped on principal photography for a pretty big short film project.

The film is about a couple who are both musicians that write and perform as a duo. The guy gets approached by A&R from a major record company and is offered a deal IF he goes solo and proceeds without his girlfriend. Meanwhile, the girl unexpectedly discovers she is pregnant.

As everything's about to come to a head and decisions are about to be made, the couple have a car crash because the dude starts texting whilst driving. Sadly, his girlfriend's injuries are fatal. It ends there.

This film has been made to help prevent driver distraction. It'll be played as part of a major campaign at the end of the year, and also in schools and colleges across the nation as the characters are ambitious young people that the audience can engage with and start to care about before the inevitable happens.

The only trouble is, is we don't have a title for it yet and the marketing and PR is due to commence this week. We're looking for an ambiguous name that is seemingly referring to the decisions the characters are facing in the film or their music, but can ultimately be referring to the fatal accident also- but it needs to be really subtle so as not to give away the whole point!

If anyone has any suggestions, they'd be much appreciated and a credit will go out to whoever picks the title we end up settling on.

Many thanks in advance,
Emmeline

"Dead Weight"

Y'know, like she became a burden to him, hindering his progress. And then she's dead.

Shut up, it was the best I could come up with over a coffee. And at least I gave it a go, not like everyone else here. Cowards!

Alwyne,

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of thing we're after. I like it but I'm wondering if it perhaps makes it sound like a horror film? I'll pass it on though!

Thank you thank you,
Em

I think it can also be spelled as one word, which I feel comes over as more subtle - Deadweight.

That might be just a US spelling, though.

Last Call
The Wrong Note

And being snarky, I couldn't help but list these not very appropriate titles:

Killing Stephanie
Problem Solved!
Family Plot
How to get ahead in the Music Business
It all worked out, in the end
Frank's Best Day Ever

Paddy and Dan, these are great. The word 'solo' is definitely a good one to play with I think.

And Dan... That made me chuckle way too much. I'll pass them onto The AA (who funded the project) and see what they reckon ;)

When the Music's Over (also use the Doors soundtrack by the same name) or you could get more ambiguous like "Highway Blues" or "The Last Duet" (nod to "The Last Waltz") or "Last Tango in (whatever City it's filmed)" or you could to Extreme Ambiguity like "The Wombat that Knew Too Much Part IV".

Maybe not as good as Dead Weight, but how about Vexed Message?

It's a pun on Text Message (he's texting when he crashes), and things have been vexed between him and his partner. And if in the script he happens to be texting his acceptance of the recording deal when he crashes, all the more appropriate.

I don't have an idea for a title, but I'm wondering why they didn't ALL die, because left as it is, the message appears to be that texting at the wheel is a way to get rid of unwanted obstacles in your life and become rich and famous.

8 years, 11 months ago - Emmeline Hartley

Hi all,

Thank you so much for all the messages. After sending your suggestions over, including 'Crescendo', our executive producers then suggested 'Cadence' or 'Dissonance', one of which I think we'll be going with. I can see someone else has just suggested 'Cadence' too which makes me like it even more! We were certainly toying with 'Going Solo', 'Solo Artist' and 'Dead Weight' as well.

Couldn't have found anything without your help to brainstorm though, so I'd like to thank you all in our credits. Let me know if I have your name wrong or if you'd rather I didn't:

Alwyne Kennedy
Paddy Robinson-Griffin
Dan Selakovich
Andrew Griffin
Tegan Harris
Bridget Bradshaw
Mät King
Helen Creval
Alan Dunlop

And in answer to your question Star, there's a lot more to the plot than the info I've given here. Also, he finds out she's pregnant and the text he's sending is turning the offer down saying he can't do this without her. We want the film to make people think about how fatal accidents can affect the friends and family of those killed, and we also want to get across that he now has to live with his mistake.

What wanted something subtle, ambiguous and memorable. The artwork and marketing should do the catching for us as we have some pretty good ideas up our sleeves for that. We wanted a title you can mull over that might not make sense until after you've seen the film, so if it means people have to work out the definition while they're at it, then that's dandy!

Emmeline, my preference is for Róisín Monaghan's Split Second. He's required to split from the secondary person in the partnership and he crashes when he's distracted for a split second. Oh, and she gets split open in the crash.

All hail Róisín Monaghan, our new God of Titles.

Metronome and Falsetto have cool ambiguous qualities. The obvious answer is Driven to Distraction but a bit too on the nose :)

The message of the piece seems to wrong way around to me (I understand there's more to it than you've told us). Surely the record deal should require both of them, he's distracted (by a message about it I assume), crashes, she's dead, record deal gone.

The way it is it feels a bit like "Never, ever, text while driving...... however if you do it just may sort out that awkward record deal issue.". Also that stipulation made me assume on first read that he crashed the car on purpose to kill her and get the deal, but maybe that says more about me.....
