I have tried starting a writers group with my filmmaking friends with little success. Most of them have several rolls they want to pursue and writing is not on top of their list. So I have since looked into writing groups but the issue I find with that is not only are there few in London (that I know of) but most of the ones you are welcome to join are for beginners.
I am looking for a writers group or people to talk to about scripts face to face (their's and mine). I was hoping that people here would know of some? If it was a case of providing samples to show I'm on the same level I'd be happy to share. The main thing for me is to find groups that aren't made up of people looking for a career change, learning formatting or who think that success happens over night (which is what most of the groups I have found are).
Alternatively I wonder if there is or could be a meet up similar to the Shooters in the Pub meet up for writers to get to know each other. If there is that's great and if there isn't would anyone be interested in starting one? Writing is very isolating, as I'm sure you know, so meeting others who are in the same mindset and who can swap tips and give advice face to face might be very helpful.
Anyone agree? Or can you point me in a good direction?

Eoin, a year or two ago, just starting out in screenwriting (late in life) I advertised locally in mid Wales for other aspirant screenwriters and got a group together which worked well for a while. We met once a month and read and commented on each others' work. Eventually it disintegrated because people got distracted or disheartened or had troubles. I persisted and lately I have found the BFI writers' labs which Film Agency Wales have run really brilliant. You get mentored by screenwriters and that makes all the difference: they have done it and know the ropes and they have been paid to read your script! There will be the same thing run in your area or near it, I think.

For a night similar to Shooters in the pub I can recommend my own night The Braine Hownd Film Night. We show about an hour of short films then drink and chat for the remaining 3+hrs. There is a good mix of writers, directors, producers and many a collaboration has been spawned from the events. We run it at the Art House cinema - Crouch End on the first Tuesday of the Month and The Hob - Forest Hill on the second Wednesday. I am a writer myself and have found it a very useful resource to meet other writers and collaborators. If you're free tonight we will be at the Hob.

I have been going to Write Together meetup group in London for a while and it is very helpful for sitting around and writing, though it's not dedicated to script writing and therefore there is no reading and analysis.Saying that, I don't think people will object if someone wants to read part of their script in the socialising part of the night. It might be a good idea to start one that is only for script writers.
