In his year round up, filmmaker Robert Greene suggests that documentary filmmakers might be partly responsible for the collapse of fact, through their pursuit of subjectivity and interest in making 'meta-documentaries' that explore the interplay "between truth and lies."

Is he right to think this? What responsibility do documentary filmmakers hold for the current political climate, and what should they be doing better?

Each of us as individuals and film makers has a subjective perspective, which ought to also be objective. Polemics are often more truthful and transparent than so called "fair and balanced" observations. It's up to posterity and God to declare the ultimate truth in a factual documentary but lies and damned lies are an abomination, as are such falsehoods motivated by aspirational expedience.
