INDEXTim League keynote on the current state of distribution

CEO of Alamo Draft House (a distributor) had a great keynote for Film Independent that I think everybody here will find some value in. You can watch it here:

My usual advice for a filmmaker who got an offer from a distributor to open their film in 2 cities was to tell the distributor to go fuck themselves. Anybody can open their film in 2 cities. But times, they are achangin' in distribution and film sales.
One thing I didn't know an hour ago, was that New Zealand has succeeded in equity financing on crowd funding. YES! We've been trying to do that here in America for years. What that means is you are not donating money on a crowd source film, you are INVESTING it. Just like that, your $100 bucks to a filmmaker could actually turn a profit. Maybe I'll move to New Zealand.
Here's a tid-bit from the keynote: "The harsh reality: it's a really really tough business and there are some real assholes out there so beware," ..."blood-sucking freaks, but the harsh reality is you need the blood-sucking freaks."
The keynote is an hour long, and it will be the best hour you have all week.

Some good and useful comments and observations from the usual suspects ;-))
As ever I try to put things into the context of actual Law beyond legislative presumption, because everything we do in the world of commerce and trade, and most everything else too, is subject to it, no matter what so many in ivory towers desperately assert to the contrary.
Just as there are blurred lines between tax avoidance and tax evasion, as any bankster, politician, tycoon and super star can affirm, much of the legislation emanating from governments, who must surely be contenders for the title 'most inefficient creators of blunt instruments in the world', there are any number of lawful ways to avoid being a part of their paradigms (reality bubbles). Most things affected by legislation can be defined by the meaning of words, which form the bedrock of Law and legislation (note that, despite the assertions of governments within Common Law and some other constitutional domains, Law and legislation are not, fundamentally, at all the same thing). Simply, there is no need to play this game within the presumed structures provided by some when other structures are provided by others. The alternative structures are 'relatively' closely held and not widely discussed but it doesn't take the brains of a rocket scientist to discover them.
Freeing oneself from establishment conditioning is the first step. If you find a financial or legal adviser who truly understands this you probably can't afford them or won't have the networks to join that club; fortunately these days their assistance is no longer essential. A pertinent but far from definitive example here is the differing rules that exist in different countries. If you don't like the set up in one place then do your deals in another! You don't even need to travel; and neither do the investors!
The naming of parts is the whole of the law. Two or more circumstances may in effect be exactly the same thing in real life but by naming them differently within terms of legal reference they become completely different in Law. A bit like the differences between avoidance and evasion. This is a game played out every day by powerful elites who operate beyond the 'apparent' intent of legislation. So can we all. Just remember though that some of those elites become so greedy that they cross the line somewhat foolishly, thereby proving that to become a member of that lawless elite idiocy is not a bar.

@Dan Selakovich Heh, it's a small platform and quite immature, but a friend had the claim that he produced the first equity crowd funded movie in the UK... And he's in post :)
Problem is people don't know about it or understand it yet. Kickstarter is a more familiar and trusted brand!
