Anyone know how to do a cool animation of a map?

10 years, 1 month ago - Michael Chandler

Hi
We're producing a short film about our recent touring theatre show Benefit (you may have seen my previous post about its recent live-streaming). The tour has been all across the UK - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - and gained a great amount of vox pops from audiences across the UK.

I was hoping someone can advise about how to make an animated map showing the tour and its journey - is there any software available that does it? Or, if you're an animator, would you be interested in doing something like this?

Many thanks

That depends, would you be interested in paying for it? ;)

There's no specific tool for doing this sort of thing although it's easily achievable in most of the 2D/3D creative tools out there - you should be able to do this in After Effects without too much trouble.

I suppose you've done this already.

There are different animations you could do.

One is tracing the map, another is tracing the route. I have done both kinds of things in Motion 5 and Flash, but these could also be done with free software like Blender.

Here's something I made last year (Motion):

And here's what I made when I really had no idea what I was doing a few years ago (flash):

If you like I can have a go at this in Motion 5 for you.

Digital effects are never as impressive as actual shooting. Get a huge map of Britain and film/animate the places with big signs that you pin in, or something similar.

Some nice tools for use with After Effects at aescripts.com like

You could make a Google Earth tour movie: https://support.google.com/earth/answer/148137?hl=en

You do require permission from Google to use it for public distribution but I don't think it's a problem.

Hey Michael,

I created this animated map sequence with After Effects, let me know if something similar would suit your needs. Best of luck.
